The Carolina Tarwheels Bicycle Club
A group of bicycle enthusiasts who organize social rides in Orange, Durham, Wake, Alamance, and Chatham counties of North Carolina. We promote the fun and challenge of cycling and advocate for cycling safety and bike-friendly policies in our communities. The Tarwheels are affiliated with the League of American Bicyclists (LAB).
Bikefest is in August!
August 9 th , to be exact. Resister now, for the lowest registration rate.There is a rider cap, so do not be late and be disappointed.
May is Bike Month!

New board members elected
In the January Club Meeting, elections were held and the following board members have either been newly elected or have returned to the board.

We would also like to thanks James Heil and John Rubin for running as well. This was probably the most candidates running for board positions in some time. This bodes well for the future of the club with so much interest. We hope to hear more from Mr. Heil and Rubin as we plan our activities for the year.
We would also like to thank Paul Caldwell for managing the newsletters you receive, Barbara Keyworth for handling the web site and, of course, Sharon Roggenbuck for organizing the club meetings.
The Tarwheels are pleased to announce the 2013 grants the Tarwheels have awarded to local bicycling related causes and groups.
The funds granted are all from the 2013 Bikefest we hold every summer in Hillsborough. We donated over $16,000 to these organizations!
Evolution Jr. Devo Cycling
Fund will go towards them obtaining non profit status and also to one youth scholarship. The program is a youth competitive cycling program
Kidical mass is a moment geared towards getting more small children on bikes and also to raise awareness that bikes are traffic too
Special Olympics Cycling Team
Grant is to go towards the purchase of specialized recumbent bicycles
Carrboro Bicycle Coalition
Grant is to go towards the purchase and installation of bicycle racks near bicycle friendly businesses
Trips for Kids - Triangle
Grant is for costs to repair the storage shed for their bikes. Trips for Kids organizes mountain bike rides in the triangle for elementary school aged children, especially for kids who have never had the opportunity to ride in the woods.
Grant is for start up funds for the new USA cycling certified cycling team at the school for creative studies in Durham
Triangle bike works / Spokn revolutions
Grant is to support the Triangle bikeworks youth cycling program, aimed at getting teens on bikes and also involves a year long distance touring trip
Mr. Days has, for many years, refurbished bicycles for giving to children, especially around the Christmas holidays.
Grants previously awarded but worth mentioning
- The Tarwheels helped fund the North Carolina Bike summit that took place in Carrboro in October
- The Tarwheels has also helped fund a water stop at United Grove Methodist Church in Hillsborough. This is a popular ride start for Tarwheels group rides
