As usual, the Carolina Tarwheels Bicycle Club makes no guarantees about the safety of these routes, only that they are scenic and popular with local cyclists.

Nearly Famous Yanceyville Ride
(Hills, lots of them!)

Consists of 47 or 77 very hilly miles. The ride is in three sections of approximately 24 mi. each. The first and third sections make up the 47 mile route. The middle section is the optional 29 mi. loop out of Yanceyville and back which will give you 77 miles total ride. You use the same Marathon station for a rest stop for each loop. Keep in mind most of the hills come in the 3rd or final section. Because this is a very hilly ride it is not recommended for beginners. The ride starts at the gas station at the intersection of Route 86 and 49 North. This is about 14 miles north of Hillsborough. Did we mention that there were a lot of hills?

Miles Ride Name Description
40 Route 1: Union Grove Church to Saxapahaw Group's favorite ride. Not much traffic, with rolling hills and a great rest stop.  This ride comes down the Borland hill (experienced riders reach 30 mph).
38 Route 2: Union Grove Church through Hillsborough You get to climb Borland hill one mile into the ride.  A bit more demanding than Route 1 but a very pleasant ride that goes through  Hillsborough & northern Orange County.
42 Route 3: Union Grove Church to east of Hillsborough and Efland This loop goes just east of Hillsborough  out New Sharon Church. Route is not very hilly and very little traffic.
43 Route 4: Union Grove Church to White Cross and Frosty's The hardest and most hilly ride... very demanding and has no place where you can use a bathroom.  The middle of the ride is out in a very rural area, and the end has traffic coming into and through Carrboro.  Watch for dogs in several places on this ride...especially the 10- mile section after you cross the Haw River and turn off Old Greensboro Road.
42 Route 5: Union Grove Church to Fuel City This route is a shorter version of the Saturday morning standing ride. It's the least hilly of all the loops we do.  Rest stop is at Fuel City in Haw River
40 Route 6: Union Grove Church to Crawford Dairy l This loop goes south on Dodson/White Cross to Crawford Dairy. Short stint on Hwy 54 but there is a wide shoulder. Not a very hilly loop but does have some rollers.
40 Route 7: Union Grove to Churton Grove Coffee shop This loop goes into west Durham County and to Hillsborough for a stop at the coffee shop  at Chrurton Grove Shopping Center. This route is fairly hilly but very little traffic. Favorite wintertime route.
48 Route 8: Union Grove Church to Pittsboro General store This route goes south to Pittsboro with a stop the The General store. This is a hilly loop and has a section that goes on 15/501 but it's either 35 mph S/L or 4 lanes.

Tour de Eno Ride

That's pronounced "Tore day Eeno" if you're a native. Click below to see the cue sheet for the route used at the Tarwheels-sponsored ride at the Festival on the Eno in 2004.
